Sonya Collins is an independent journalist and editor, who covers health care, medicine, and biomedical research. She is a regular contributor to WebMD, Fortune, CURE, Health Central, Pharmacy Today, and publications put out by AARP. Her stories have also appeared in Scientific American, KHN's Georgia Health News, and Family Circle.

Sonya holds an MA in Health & Medical Journalism from the University of Georgia and an MFA in Creative Writing from The New School. Her reporting has won awards for Excellence in Health Care Journalism from the Association of Health Care Journalists and a Robert G. Fenley Writing Award from the Association of American Medical Colleges. She was a finalist for an Atlanta Press Club 2024 Award of Excellence and earned an honorable mention in Folio’s 2016 Eddie Awards.

In addition to her primary work as a journalist, Sonya is a certified meditation instructor and sound healer, formally trained in Nepal. During five months spent living and working in South and Southeast Asia, she practiced with monks in Laos and gurus in Nepal. These experiences have broadened her perspective and enriched her reporting on health and healing.

Sonya was a teaching fellow at The New School while earning her MFA in Creative Writing. She has also taught expository and creative writing at Hunter College of the City University of New York, where she earned her B.A., and at the University of Georgia. During her teaching stint at UGA, she contributed an article on author Elizabeth Gilbert (Eat, Pray, Love) to the Encyclopedia of Contemporary American Fiction (2010).

 

Sonya has many years of experience teaching English as a Second Language and Brazilian Portuguese as a Foreign Language both in the US and in Brazil. She has translated literary and scholarly Portuguese-language texts to English for publication.

 

An avid traveler and self-described "part-time digital nomad," she has traveled to 26 countries and chronicles her travel experiences on her blog Another Island.
